One word: Specificity.
When you make broad and generalized goals, such as; lose weight, get fit, sleep better etc the goal becomes overwhelming and unmeasurable. You will just end up doing the same predictable things you always do. How can you evolve your actions? This year when you write out your New Year Resolution use a strategy. I’m going to break it down for you. It’s all about subtle evolutions vs abrupt change. How long did it take you to create the habit cycle that you’re in right now? Probably a helluva long time. So now, it’s time to break down the new habits that you WANT to gain into subroutines. Subroutines– building blocks of smaller objectives within your main objective. So we pick our main objective, and then break that down into five attainable milestones. Does this already seem like a lot of work? It’s not, this will take you very little time. You need to lead yourself, nothing changes if nothing changes. Take twenty minutes to sit down and write it out. I’ll even give you an example.
Main objective: Get Fit
Subroutine 1: Walk 20 min. Monday-Saturday at 8am
Subroutine 2: Eat my last meal of the day at 7pm everyday.
Subroutine 3: Do 20 push-ups, 50 squats and 50 sit-ups on my lunch break every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Subroutine 4: Eat 5oz of protein with each meal everyday.
Subroutine 5: Lay out my workout clothes the night before Monday-Saturday.
This is a perfect example of creating specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound goals. Each subroutine is specific and manageable, this is extremely important to remember when writing out your five attainable milestones. I hope this helps! It has always kept me from getting overwhelmed each year, so I’d love to know if you give it a try. If you have any other questions please don’t hesitate to ask!
Onward,
Timmie
